Species Recovery Appeal

For the past 53 years, BirdWatch Ireland has worked hard to save our most threatened bird species from extinction. It is our most fundamental aim as a conservation charity, and is only possible thanks to the generous support of our members and donors.

Our organisation has an unprecedented track record in Ireland when it comes to species recovery. For example, through more than three decades of hard, painstaking work on Dublin’s Rockabill Island, we have completely changed the fortunes of Europe’s Roseate Terns: Rockabill now holds the largest colony of this species in all of Europe.

Our nestbox-installation and community-engagement work for Barn Owls has been instrumental in the most recent breeding season being the best on record for this enigmatic species in Ireland.

Painstaking work at our nature reserves in Co. Mayo has brought about the return of the Red-necked Phalarope as an Irish breeding species, and has also provided breeding habitat for endangered Irish species as diverse as Corncrake and Great Yellow Bumblebee.

Through a combination of on-the-ground conservation and monitoring work and high-level advocacy, we are trying to turn the tide for Ireland’s highly threatened breeding waders, such as Curlews, Lapwings and Snipe, and other declining farmland birds, including Yellowhammers, Skylarks and Meadow Pipits.

We need to keep fighting to save Ireland’s threatened bird species on your behalf . . . but we can’t do it without your support. That’s why we are asking you, please, to contribute what you can to our Species Recovery Appeal. All funds raised will go to furthering our work to conserve and protect some of Ireland’s most endangered species and their habitats.
