Seasonal Swift Fieldworkers (pending successful funding applications)

Position Status : Open

Subject to the success of relevant funding applications, BirdWatch Ireland, Ireland’s largest wildlife conservation NGO, is seeking to recruit several Seasonal Swift Fieldworkers for the period from mid-June to mid/end August 2026, to conduct survey and outreach work as part of County Swift Projects in the following areas:

  • South County Dublin (full time role)
  • Buncrana and Letterkenny, Co. Donegal (part time role, likely 3 days/week)
  • Enniscorthy and New Ross, Co. Wexford (part time role, likely 3 days/week)

Our County Swift Projects aim to record and quantify the level of Swift nesting activity in selected towns and villages. They will identify where nesting Swift populations are found and highlight where urgent conservation action is needed. The survey team will make a special effort to include local community groups and residents in the project, to help establish a local network of Swift champions in each area.

Job Description

  • Carry out surveys of Swifts in selected towns/villages to locate Swift populations and nest sites, inputting all data when in the field to the Swift survey portal.
  • Identify suitable locations for Swift nest box and brick projects.
  • Establish connections and liaise with individuals and community groups to help establish a network of local Swift champions.
  • Assist with the completion of interim and final reports.
  • Assist with and carry out where applicable, Swift events such as walks and/or presentations.
