Sensitivity Mapping to Safeguard Birds

The relationship between wind energy developments and birds is variable and complex and depends on a number of factors including: the extent and type of development and associated topography, the type of habitat and individual bird species present, and their distribution and abundance in the area. Most threats can be minimized or reduced by avoiding sites with sensitive habitats and key populations of vulnerable and endangered species and increasing our understanding of the effects of wind energy on birds. Sensitivity Mapping can help in this regard.

Onshore Renewables

Our main focus currently is on onshore wind energy. It has an important role in eliminating use of fossil fuel energy sources. The location selected for wind energy is critically important to minimise impacts to birds. Check out our bird wind energy sensitivity mapping tool.

Offshore Renewables

Offshore renewables must be developed in a way that ensures that there are minimum impacts to seabirds. We are developing a marine renewables sensitivity mapping tool to this end.
